Telescope returns to action at Lingfield – Horseracing News
Telescope returned to action with a gallop at Lingfield in order to prove his fitness for the Investec Derby, which is scheduled to take place in June.
His stable mates Opinion and Commend were also alongside him and all of them appeared to be in pretty decent shape.
Looking at Telescope’s workout, trainer Sir Michael Stoute said, “It was a workmanlike display, he has been working with these two horses this spring and has worked much better. I felt he didn't switch off and
hopefully it will have done him the power of good. We'll see what today has done for him mentally more than anything else.”
The three-year-old has not appeared in any race this season, which means he might be a touch rusty. Moreover, he lacks experience at the highest level, which will also put him under pressure before heading to
Epsom. He has only taken part in a couple of races until now, which took place in September 2012.
However, the Irish stallion was able to make a strong impression in both those events, which would give a lot of hope to his fans. Although he failed to win his maiden race, he ended up as a runner up in it,
which was not a bad performance at all. His team did not have to wait for long, as he opened his account with a victory in his very next outing.
Despite that, Telescope’s owners Highclere Thoroughbred Racing were not pleased with his current form and believed that there is a lot of work yet to be done before the action kicks off in the Investec Derby.
According to the managing director of Highclere Harry Herbert, “Ryan Moore (jockey) thought he got his tongue over the bit fairly early on and he's not put in a performance as good as we hoped.”
Although the final line up for the Derby has not yet been decided, some class performers have been listed for it. One of them is Dawn Approach, who will certainly be rated as the outright favourite to succeed
because of his exceptional record. He has got a 100 percent winning record and will not make things easy for the likes of Telescope.
