  1. If I'm reading the question correctly, it's the study of the moon through a telescope.  It *had* an impact several hundred years ago, when the craters of the moon were first clearly viewed, but... there's none today.


  2. I wouldn't go so far as to say there's no impact anymore.

    One of the interesting ongoing studies is where you look at a dark portion of the Moon through a telescope with a video camera looking for flashes from impacts, especially during a meteor shower.  The idea is to get frequency data.  That way, when you're trying to determine the likelihood that astronauts might get hit, you have some data to start from.

    Early on, the view of mountains, as on Earth, and dark areas that were called seas led some to believe that there were intelligent beings on the Moon.

    Well, there were, briefly, when the Apollo astronauts were there.
