This came about after an office discussion about the Olympics and a competitor from Britain with a name that defined her cultural beginnings in most people's minds...

Who?

They laughed at your name

Mocked it, in fact - common.

'Bet her sister's called Chardonnay

Or Tray-cee or Kay-Lee!'

Smirking, they joked about

Your family, roots, Gippos.

An ignorant litany of

Unthinking, racist bigotry.

Then I thought to myself

'Hang on! You're an Olympian!

A veritable force of nature

A role model, a talisman.

From humble beginnings

You reached for the stars,

And became one yourself, shining.

Beyond the ken of hyenas.

While they fight among themselves

You are fighting for glory.

Well, let me tell you, Shaznaye

You've won me over.
