  1. As a native Finn I have travelled to Helsinki about 5 times so far, and it's alright place indeed. A bit more expensive than other major Finnish cities though, but not too bad. The best time to stay there is the summertime, because then there are a lot more exhibitions, concerts, summer happenings and other activities than in the wintertime. But if you are looking forward to see some proper northern lights or snow here in Finland, then I am sorry but Helsinki is NOT the right place for that!! Instead, a visit to Lapland is recommended if you want to experience a proper winter. For more about Helsinki, see www.helsinki.fi => select the English website !

  2. Helsinki, the capital of Finland, is over 500 years old with about 500.000 inhabitants, There is touch of "east" over Helsinki. The centre of Helsinki really is a "must" see place for every tourist, our old Church, the University and the House of State are situated there.

Nearby is the market, where you can buy anything from fish to souvenirs. It´s quite by the sea. so from there I recommend you a boat tour to an old fortress Suomenlinna, it´s really interesting there. I does not take you long to come over there, perhaps 15 min. You can also take boat tours around Helsinki, that´s really worth while too.

Quite near the market is a tourist office, where they can give you good advice where to go. Tourist tours around the city and the areas nearby are also arranged.

The night life is vivid, perhaps not in the middle of the summer, because the natives have holidays and are at their country cottages. There are a lot of good restaurants too.

Here are just some small details listed, but I´m sure you will get help where to go from the tourist office or your hotel. Hope you will get good answers from Yahoo too.

Have a lovely holiday, by the way I recommend summer time, if you are planning to come to Helsinki and have a lots of fun!
