over 200 years a scientist named Edward Jenner discovered it and tried making a vaccine for it. back in the day there was a mild disease by the name of cowpox. He tested his vaccine from cow pox on a guy named Jamie Phipps. Phipps developed cowpox. Then Jenner inoculated him with the smallpox disease. Surprisingly, Phipps didnt get infected. So now days the vaccination for smallpox is actually cowpox.
