  2. Arguably there are 2 types of green card: the conditional and the non-conditional card.

The conditional card is granted to foreign nationals who are married to a US citizen but have not been married to that US citizen for a minimum of 2 years. People who fall in that category get a conditional green card, which is valid for 2 years. Once they have been married for 2 years, they may file for removal of conditions and get a 10-year, non-conditional green card.

All other green cards are of the 10-year variety and they are all the same: they're just green cards.

They can, however, be applied for in various different ways.

To put it simply, they can be:

    1) Employer-sponsored, where a US employer applies for you to get a green card and come work in the US for them

    2) Family-sponsored; if you are a US citizen, you may sponsor your spouse, your unmarried or married children, your parents (father and/or mother), or your siblings (brothers and/or sisters) to come to the US and be awarded a green card. If you are a green card holder, you may sponsor your spouse and unmarried children to come to the US and be awarded a green card.

    3) The Diversity lottery; the lottery awards up to 55,000 green cards per year to people selected at random from a pool of millions of applicants worldwide.

Wikipedia does have a good article on green cards at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/United_Stat... but beyond that, you should check the site of the US Department of State: http://travel.state.gov/visa/immigrants/...

And the website of US Citizenship and Immigration Services: http://www.uscis.gov/
