Normally, the LAN network is anything between your internetconnection (CableModem, ADSLModem etc.) and your computers. Your computers can talk to each other, share resources connect to the internet using a router. That router can be either in the (Cable/ADSL)Modem or seperate.

A WAN network is basicly the rest of the world, so before your (Cable/ADSL)Modem. In fact it is what we call the internet. So suppose you want to share resources with a friend living on the other side of town. You can either buy a very long cable and make a direct connection (Mostly impossible because you would have to dig it into the ground) or simply use you internet connection.

The danger here is that you make your internetconnection available and visible to the internet. This way your friend can connect to the internet and via the internet to you using your WAN IP-Address

Of course you want only your friend eing able to connect, so you need very good protection by a firewall and username/password to make shure that intruders stau out.

So the basic disadvantage is safety.
