  1. Libya was known to the Egyptians and Greeks in ancient times. Supposedly Odysseus met the Lotus-eaters there on his travels. The Phoenicians and Greeks founded cities there, Tripoli being formed from three earlier cities joined together (Tripoli from Greek "tri-polis" for three cities). The Romans took over Libya and many famous Romans, including Emperor Septimius Severus, came from Libya.

In the Middle Ages, Libya became part of the Islamic Empire. In the early days of the United States, pirates based in Libya (the "Barbary Coast") attacked U.S. ships, bringing about the first U.S. victory over a foreign nation. The U.S. Marines still celebrate this in their anthem, with the line "From the halls of Montezuma, to the shores of Tripoli". This war is notable in history, as the peace treaty with the Dey of Tripoli stated that the U.S. had no desire to persecute Muslims, as its government was not founded on the Christian religion (there is some disagreement that this is a mistranslation, however)

Libya became an important international player when oil was discovered there. Italy colonized the country under Mussolini, and built up many of its modern buildings. After World War II, Libya gained independence as a kingdom. Colonel Moammar Qaddafi seized power in a coup in 1969. Libya supported Islamist terrorists, but presidents Ronald Reagan and Bill Clinton bombed Libya, and the World Court found Libyan agents responsible for the bombing of Pan Am flight 103 over Lockerbie, Scotland.

In recent years, Qaddafi has moved away from supporting terrorism and has been trying to modernize the country. Libya recently engendered worldwide protests when it prosecuted foreign health workers for infecting children with HIV, though the workers claimed dirty working conditions in Libyan hospitals caused the infections. The workers were released after Qaddafi commuted their death sentences. Libya has struggled to reconcile Islamic fundamentalism with modernization, as in a recent case where a British teacher faced a death penalty for allowing her students to name a stuffed bear "Mohammed".

  2. It is a country in northern Africa, and its capital is Tripoli.

  3. It is an Oil Exporter.  It was the scene of the earliest battles between the British/American alliance, and the Germans in WWII.
