I think I will be able to get a hamster since I've cared for gerbils (and a fish) for 2 years now. I'm thinking of getting a Dwarf Hamster.

Important questions:

(1) DO THEY SMELL!!! (very important)

(2) How often should I clean their cage?

(3) Do they need another companion?

(4)Can they chew through plastic cages?

Along with all these questions tell me everything you know about care for your hamsters! And you can also recommend cages (from petsmart or petco websites only please, thanks) Oh and by the way, I will NEVER buy Habitrail cages, they are evil xD. You might as call them haBETRAYAL lol well anyway, thanks i appreciate your answers!!

  1. Ok uhh...

They can smell if you don't clean their cage.

Their cages have to be cleaned every week or month depending on the size of the cage. But most of the time at lease every two weeks.

And yes, they can chew through plastic (one of my hamsters(Larka) escaped that way)  So a cage with bars are good. The hamsters also like to chew on the bars.

    And fo additional info...

    -They are basically like gerbals

    -Their nockturnl

    -Hamsters can't eat meat

    -Or sugary thins

-They can be really noisy at night(which is their day)

-And they jump from your hands alot(so be carful, my hamster(Larka..again)broke/sprained her lef from it)

    -Their insanly cute(lol)

-don't give them ttoilet paperrolls (toxic)

    --------------------------------------...

    Warning!

    Dwarf hamsters are mean!

I guess they do it to make up for their small size.

    I had one once(Leon)

    completely evil lol

I guess thats why they have red eyes

a point of advice: Get a teddy bear or other larger breed of hamster.

    they're much more enjoyable.

  5. 1) Hamsters do NOT smell.  They have a slight natural odor but people think they smell because they probably don't clean the cage often enough.

    2) Clean the cage once a week or sooner if the cage smells like urine which can happen more often when the temperature in the room has been hot.

    3) Hamsters can live on their own and be happy.  If you get a companion make sure you get them at the same time and from the same cage.  If they are from the same litter and grew up together they should get along fine.

    4) Hamsters have been known to chew through plastic in their cages

Hamsters are easy to care for.  If you have had gerbils then you pretty much already know what to do!  Make sure they have their wheel and a hamster ball is a good idea.  Never use cedar or pine bedding.  It's toxic to hamsters.

I use ten gallon glass aquariums.  I just keep them in a well ventilated area.  Hamsters can kick stuff around a lot (just like gerbils) so I prefer aquariums because it's less mess and they are more accessible.

Feed them every other day or every two days.  I only say this because hamsters will stash food in their cage in several places.  Their food dish may be empty but they have food throughout the cage or in their nest.

Dwarf hamsters are not mean.  They get labeled as mean because they can bite a lot when they get startled or are afraid of you.  Sometimes they bite or nip if they smell food on  your hands.

I've had over thirty dwarf hamsters in the past few years and out of the thirty I had two that were very nasty.  The gentlest dwarf hamsters I have were the babies that grew up in my house.  I now have Syrian hamsters and five gerbils.  The Syrian hamsters are the most gentle and friendly  hamsters I have ever had.  They have to live on their own but they are great pets.
