I believe it began to assume its present shape in 1867?

It has close cultural and historical links with the United Kingdom.   It is part of the Commonwealth and the British Queen is also head of state of Canada.   Despite what some may think there is a Canadian accent : it may sound similar to the American one but listen out for the subtle differences.

Its people come from many different backgrounds.  Like the USA, a lot come originally from Europe but there are people of all races and nationalities.  

In 1999 I believe the Innnuit people (spelling?) got their own province in the far north of Canada.

There are also of course French speakers in Canada, the Quebecois, who have their own province which surprisingly is called Quebec.     The Quebec legal system is based on the French Napoleonic legal code whereas in the rest of Canada it is based on British common law, like in the USA.  

Canada is a federal state, so each province has quite a bit of control over its own affairs.  There is a good healthcare system, with coverage for all and Canadians have quite a good standard of living.   Vancouver has on occasion been voted one of the best cities in the world.   Like countries everywhere, it does however have the usual share of domestic problems.

In terms of industry, I know that oil is quite a big industry in Alberta and I would imagine tourism is quite strong in British Columbia as that is really quite a scenic province (the Rockies are very beautiful) and also known for its skiing.  I would imagine that in the eastern part of Canada (the Atlantic provinces), fishing is quite strong.   As Canada is such a vast country with an enormous amount of wide, open space (such as the prairies) I would guess that agriculture is also quite big.  Having lived in Canada as a kid, I have vague memories of the grain elevators that you would sometimes get.

As for world affairs, you generally don't hear much from Canada but since September 2001 it has been quite involved in Afghanistan however not in Iraq.    It gives the impression of being a country that generally keeps itself to itself and doesn't go out of its way to annoy others.   I would imagine it plays quite a role in the United Nations.

i have a little knowledge about canada. because my friend and his wife his father and mother live also with him. when he come back in India he meet me. He says canda is very beautiful country. their people very beautiful and loveable. so i love it and want to come in canada and see every city and lovely people and meet him as like "YOU". plz not mind if any mistake because i have little knowledge for english but i understand and speak it slowly.
