  1. My understanding is it's compulsory but unenforceable. IE, it's no one's business if a woman is wearing a hijab but her and Allah. But you would have better luck asking this on R&S where a Muslim or comparative religion person can answer your question.

  2. as a muslim you are to follow the ibadat and hifasat shown to mankind by Sallillah Valai Assalam given in the hadees and quran.

I am a kafir Hindu.  But I know this.

  3. ok the question is talking about islam ...so this has nothing to do with what governments or societies expect

it is compulsory in islam to wear the hijaab BUT it is for the woman to decided when she sud wear it ..she sud not be pressured into wear it ...it has to come from her

the idea behind the hijaab is to allow a women to be able to express herself without being judged on the aspects of beauty

so a women has to completely understand this before she wears it

  4. as there is i guess a little confusion in the question are you really asking hijab(to cover head and whole body except hands and face) or niqab (to cover everything except eyes) if  niqab then its ur choice and if its hijab then atleast it should be done but accoeding to the situation and the rest is mentioned above i guess

  5. I believe it is law to wear one in Saudi Arabia, but in most countries, even predominantly Muslim ones, it's up to the individual/family to decide.

  6. I think it depends on where you live, what the government is like, how your family is, and what your beliefs are.

Wearing the hijab is not always compulsory, but it depends on the above issues.  Sometimes, it is completely the woman's choice if she does or does not wear the hijab.  Sometimes it is the decision of the males of the family if the women should be covered, and how much they should be covered, whether it's just the head scarf covering their hair or whether it is their whole face that must be covered.  If you live in a country where women have little to no rights, and islamic law is upheld by the government, then women wear the hijab.  In most of these cases, they want to though, because it offers some protection.  In some Arabic-speaking countries and Western countries, the word hijab primarily refers to women's head and body covering, but in Islamic scholarship, hijab is given the wider meaning of modesty, privacy, and morality.  The Koran doesn't refer to the viel, but more to privacy and modesty, and does mention women covering up when they go outside to avoid harrassment (when the Koran was written, women were often pubically assaulted and bothered, so it made sense to put this in)

    Hope this helps
