Goldfish, like most seemingly mundane creatures, are actually fascinating. A lot of myths (like they have a three/seven/ten second memory) are formed from observations (they don't appear very bright), and taken as fact by most people. Everybody thinks they know everything about goldfish, but all they really know is how to keep them alive.

Firstly, their memory lasts several months. It depends on the species and the individual, but goldfish can be trained to do simple tricks like come to the surface when you whistle.

Secondly, baby fish ("fry") learn by observing adults. On a wildlife program by David Attenborough, a few goldfish fry were put in a tank and played a video of older fish. They were observed copying them almost exactly. I can't remember which program it was, but it was fascinating.

Thirdly, goldfish can live for 40 years or more. They grow to fit their container - in a huge pond they will grow to enormous lengths. The largest is believed to have been 50cm long. Imagine - if someone kept you in a tiny room, you would be the size of a small cat, and if someone kept you in an enormous field, you would be the size of an elephant!

if fantails take in too much air it will make them float upside down, Where i work we always get one who ends up floating and loads of customers come up to me telling me its dead and then look again to see him swimming fine.

This is why its advised to feed fantails sinking pellets as they take the food from the bottom of the tank rather than them going up to the top  eating flake food and taking in too much air

Everyone pretty covered everything about the goldfish...except one thing....watch for them getting large pieces of gravel stuck in their mouths...my goldfish Freckles was a big boy before he passed, one day I found him on the bottom of his tank, gasping and shaking hid head, I looked in his mouth and discovered a large piece of gravel lodged deep in his mouth, my sis and I had to take him out of his tank, hold him ( he was huge) and I had to unlodge the large gravel with tweezers....luckily it came out without too much hassle...but goldfish never learn their lessons...he ended up doing this again...
