I am living in a town with not very many home schooling families. I hear of lots of towns that have a ton of home schoolers, with lots of home schooling groups, lots of home schooling activities, where there are a lot of kids able to interact. If you live in a town like that, please tell me where it is, and what is available there regarding groups/interaction with home schoolers. I want to move from where I am now, to some place that has those characteristics. Thanks. I am in upstate N.Y. now (amherst).

  1. We live in the Tampa area of Florida.  Pinellas county is pretty liberal when it comes to homeschooling and pretty much just asks that you register the child(ren) and monitor their progress.  I think once a year or so they ask you to report on that progress, but our kids are still young enough we haven't had to cross that bridge.

I hear, also, that Texas is the "best" state for homeschooling in terms of their lack of interference by the state.  So that might be a state to look into if your seriously considerving moving.

For what it is worth, homeschooling is the BEST thing we could do for our kids.  The only school we would consider at this point is the Sudbury system of schools.   They have an amazing model which is as close to homeschooling as one could get without actually having the kids at home.

There's a Sudbury in NY, here's the link:

  2. I am in Southern New Hampshire...

We have a group that is pretty large (and it getting bigger) and has monthly meetings and calendars of activities and field trips.

Our state also has a homeschool coalition and they have TONS of information on the laws and all aspects of homeschooling.

  3. I'm in Canada in a city nearing 1 million people. I'm guessing that's not what you're looking for, is it?

If you want to stay in NY, you could try looking at some of the groups listed here http://homeschooling.gomilpitas.com/regi... .

  4. I'm in Australia...about a 3 hour drive from a town of about 70 people but in a shire of about 5000 people. I guess that's not really what you are looking for either but people up here have been homeschooling ever since the Year Dot. My parents, grandparents and great grandparents were all home educated at least until Year 7 and that's typical of pretty much every other family in the district. In town, there's a primary school but no secondary school. The Government here likes home education cuz it costs it heaps less than having to pay people's boarding school fees or second home allowances!

In fact the government here is now using virtual schools to teach classes online to kids in regular public schools...they're also starting a programme whereby parents with particular talents or knowledge are being encouraged to go into government schools to teach (a practice that sounds suspiciously akin to what happens in many homeschooling co-ops! LOL!)

  5. Florida, most definitely Florida.

There are so many people that do it and the laws there on it are AMAZING!

  6. I live in northwest Ohio we have several different groups that all do field trips and activities and have conventions all year round. There is an amazing number of home schoolers here.
