How exactally do you tell if the jump will be short or long from about 10 strides away or so, we are talking two foot/ cross rails if that helps. Thanks.

So that can help me adjust my horse's stride so he jumps it good, not short or long.

  1. There is really no way to tell from 10 strides away. Just try to count down your strides coming up to the jump, and hold your horse until you want them to jump.

Another thing to remember is that if you get a bad distance it is not all bad just wait with your body for the horse to fold you over the jump. That way even if you get a long or short spot you won't be thrown out of the saddle.

  2. When you are training, practice counting your strides to the jump, or even ground poles. The more you do this, the better you will be able to "see" the distance to the fence, as well as learn how to feel your horses rhythm, which will then allow you to tell if shortening or lengthening his stride will produce a smoother jump. hope that helped = )

  3. if u walk the corse in a comp then you will know!

  4. Well they mean when you are riding how do you adjust the horses stride so there is no chip or they dont jump big
