Question:

Temperature too high for Orandas?

I have a 55 gallon tank with 6 orandas in it. The tank typically runs at 82 degrees. All the sites i've checked on say that if your fish are sick you should RAISE the water temp to 82. My fish aren't sick, and water quality is great.

Do you think i should do something to lower the temp, or should i not try to fix what isn't broken. Would the fish be happier in say, 76 - 78 degrees?

Please advise, you guys have always been so helpful with past problems, this is more of a query!

Big thanks in advance!

  1. goldfish are cool water dwelling fishes, you might wanna lower the temperature of your tank, do not use water heater.

  2. yeah..82 is very high...also I think the more bioload you have the more it tends to heat up..55 gallon is just right for 4 orandas..cos they grow big..do you have the light on always??..I keep it off as tht would heat up my tank and my room gets good sunlight..Also I have a fan running all day just to cool off my tank...20 gallons during summer and in the day stays as high as 75 with the fan running for a period of 6-7 hrs..its then normal in 60s in evenings, nights and mornings..I also put in a couple of cubes of ice before leaving for work and after coming back..so tht it just helps to stay a lil cool...

The coolers are very expensive..I would not suggest you buy them....but if you dont mind the expenses..go for it..

EDIT: I forgot...you could get rid of your tank hood and get a wire mesh instead..the hoods tend to heat it up too..I have the wire mesh cut in the shape of my filter..be careful of the ends so that they dont hurt the fish..but tht keeps the exchange of gases going and takes some heat off too..

  3. orandas are actually coldwater fish like most other goldfish and need  a water tempeture of anywhere in the 60's. 82 degrees is too high for goldfish because of this: there is more oxygen available in cold water than warm water, and coldwater fish usually require more oxygen to live happy lives. with the warm water, they are probably struggling to get enough air, even with an air pump, the oxygen would be leave the water supply too quickly, which wont help the goldfish.    you should take out the heater. if its still to warm, a cheaper way to cool down the tank without getting a chiller, is putting the tank next to a fan, or under the air conditioning.

  4. 82 is too high but if you aren't using a heater then there isn't much you can do about it except leave the light off.  Unless you have live plants or the room is in total darkness there is no need for a light anyway.

Putting ice cubes or any kind of ice in is a bad idea.  It only cools the tank for a short period of time and is not good for your fish.  It's much better to maintain a stable temperature than have fluctuations.  Fish are cold blooded and adapt to whatever their environment is.  Goldfish have a quick metabolism and it gets even quicker in warmer water which shortens their lifespan.  I've also heard that it can cause fish with black pigment to turn orange.

The ideal temp for goldfish is in the high 60's but unless you have a chiller it's almost impossible to obtain during summer months.  Just do the best you can to keep the water temperature down by leaving the light off and possibly using a fan.

  5. oh gold fish dont need heaters and that temp. is way to high. Thats more ideal for tropical fishies. Go with a temp. of like 60 degrees. So yeah thats way to high.

  6. If the fish have ich, this high a temperature will get rid of it.  Goldfish types should not be kept in water this warm.  Below 70 is better.

  7. first do not use the ice cube probably your water is too near the lights don't open it 24 hours with high wattage water will be too hot and maybe your tank is not high enough to make the water that high temp.  Sudden change of temp will make your ordanda sick.

Sollution decrease water level or change the lights to a lower wattage.
