Question:

Temporary door to galley style kitchen?

I bought a 2 bedroom condo with a galley style kitchen close to the dining and living rooms. I use lots of exotic spices while cooking which stinks up the whole condo (except the bedrooms etc which have doors that I close during cooking.

Is there a way to set up a door to the kitchen so that I can close it while cooking, reducing the amount of smell that flows into the living area? I looked for temporary doors and could only find screen doors which sadly, won't do.

  1. Get this hinge that will let the door swing both ways.  In or out.  It will hold the door open if you push it open all the way, or just swing freely if you just push through the door normally.

  2. Congrats on your condo purchase.  Here are two thoughts for you from a kitchen designer:

    >Consider upgrading your kitchen's ventilation system.  The current one doesn't seem up to the task.

    >If creating a space-saving pocket door isn't an option, because of cost/construction issues, look at a bi-fold door that won't need as much swing room as a standard door.   (Oft-times, people fail to consider how a door's swing will impact furniture placement and work flow around it.)

On a related note, if you're interested in getting the best use of your condo's kitchen, take a look at this blog posting on multi-taskers that increase storage and functionality:

    Good luck!
