Temporary filling still okay?

hey everyone,

so i got a temporary filling about a a month ago and it's been totally fine. i never really felt any sensitivity on that side. i usually try to chew with the other side of my mouth but sometimes chew lightly on the side with the temporary filling.

yesterday evening after dinner (i had chewed a little and pretty light on the temporary filling side) and kind of used my tongue to suck out food i felt i had stuck between my teeth and gums (you know what i mean?). i think i might've sucked a little too hard because the tooth with the temporary filling has been a bit sensitive since then.

is this normal? i have a dentist appointment with a new dentist monday morning (today is thursday) because i don't like my current dentist very much. could there be a problem and if so, will it be okay until my dentist appointment in four day?

thanks in advance for any answers!

  1. Pain in a tooth usually requires a root canal or a filling with a liner of cement placed underneath to protect the nerve from temperature changes.

In your case it should be fine to leave it till your appointment but I would avoid irritation by keeping it clean (rinse with lukewarm saltwater) and chew on the other side and avoid hot or cold foods/drinks to protect the nerve, floss and brush too. If you have pain take advil until then.

It is normal to feel sensitive as parts of the filling have broken down or possibly the temporary filling needs adjusting because it is too high. Sounds like the temp won't last much longer and a filling will be required.

  2. A 'temporary' filling is just that, TEMPORARY!!!!

and they ususally are for just a couple of weeks.....!

  3. It really depends on what kind of sensitivity you are having.  as long as its not painful you are probably fine waiting until your appointment in a few days.  When you have hot sensitivity is usually when there are problems.  Since it is just a temporary the seal isn't that great and there is probably some exposed dentin somewhere causing the sensitivity.
