I recieved a temporary passport that should last a year. I received it about a couple monthes ago and paid a big fee in order to do so when trying to return from my trip to costa rica. How might i go about making it a permanent passport?

  1. Most likely you didn't meet all the requirements for a proper passport and so it was decided that since you really did need to travel a temporary one would be issued instead (sometimes there may be a note inside the passport or they may have given you a letter stating that if you meet all the requirements and apply for another passport before the temporary one does they'll will issue you another passport with that expiry date extended to the ten year mark for free (this would depend on the country in question)).

There's no such thing as a permanent passport. They can last a maximum of ten years (although some countries will allow you to extend it after ten).

  2. Use the temporary passport and when it expires, apply for a permanent passport.  The use of the temporary one is a pre-requisite for the issuance of the permanent passport.
