In the game of football, the goalie resides in a position that marks the last line of defence from the opposing team’s attacks.
His main role is to defend the ball from the goal posts and thwart the attacking striker’s attempts for the goal. The goal keeper is the only player in the game who is allowed to touch the ball with his hands.
Though the goalie can only do this in his own box, if he does a hand ball outside the white lining borders then that counts as a direct red card or at least a yellow.
The goalkeeper is a permanent member of the squad and is required to play throughout the match and more often than not the goal keepers come out of the game as heroes as their saves may dictate the results of the game.
Though some times in some desperate attempts the goal keeper does come forward to strike a goal in the last few moments of a match, but this has been known to backfire so it is a gamble that is not usually taken.
So here is a list of the ten greatest goalkeepers playing in the world of football today:
Sebatien Freys – Fiorentina and France
Sebastien Freys is a player from the Italian league and plays for the club Fiorentina.
The player seems to impress all the fans and repeatedly goes against the odds every season. He is also a part of the French national team and has only played two matches for France as of yet, in spite of his talents and efforts he has still not found a spot
in the first team of the national squad.
Frey is a player who deserves to play in more serious and bigger clubs than Fiorentina and he is expected to make a move to the big timers soon.
Hugo Lloris – Lyon and France: Hugo Lloris is a great performer and his endeavours from Nice made clubs like Lyon, Tottenham Hotspurs and AC Milan catch his attention. Though the rumours and most likely outcome did point to a move to AC
Milan but ultimately he settled with a move to Lyon.
Hugo Lloris is the current first choice goal keeper for both France and Lyon and a lot is expected from this French Goalie.
Manuel Neuer - Schalke 04 and Germany: Manuel Neuer is the member of the starting line up for both the German national team and his own club, Schalke 04.
This goalie is showing great form and is constantly impressing the masses with his performances in Schalke 04.
Manuel Neuer’s performances and consistency resulted in him finding a spot in the first team squad for Germany in the World Cup in South Africa and there he won the approval of the viewers. He was also thought to be one of the best goalkeepers of the World
Cup.
Neuer is another goal keeper that has a lot to prove to the world and a lot is expected from him.
Pepe Reina – Liverpool and Spain: Pepe Reina is an extremely talented goalkeeper and currently plays for Liverpool
Reina has set numerous goal keeping records for ‘The Reds’ and has won the Golden Glove award in the Premier League as he did not even let a single goal in three of his first five seasons with Liverpool.
Currently he is not the first choice goal keeper for the Spaniards as he is stunted by the World Cup winning captain, Iker Casillas.
