Ten Best Ryder Cup Pairs in the History of Golf (Part 2)
Contd.....
The 2010 Ryder Cup along with its final pairings would soon reveal what it holds in itself. But Bettor.com continues to look into the ten best Ryder Cup pairings till now. For all those who have read the first half of “Ten Best Ryder Cup Pairs in the History
of Golf”, here is the second half:
6) Peter Oosterhuis & Nick Faldo
Although, this isn’t the pair that amazed the world but it certainly started the Ryder Cup career for Nick Faldo, the ex-captain of European team. The duo was put into formulation in 1977 for a set of four balls and foursomes while they smashed a tremendous
victory in their first match against Ray Floyd and Lou Graham.
But this wasn’t their only victory of the day as they also won against Nicklaus and Floyd by 3-1. Two years later, together they won another of their two matches out of three.
7) Sergio Garcia & Luke Donald
Both of them didn’t seem compatible at first but Bernard Langer saw differently and bought them under the title in 2004. The current world number five was superb with the irons which signified a long hitter while Sergio Garcia had command over the shot game.
The duo claimed both their four balls while in 2008 they came back to defeat Tiger Woods and Jim Furyk.
8) Bernard Langer & Colin Montgomerie
As individuals they were superb but being together, critics took them as a mess. It seemed unthinkable of putting them together in a group as it would make the rest of the team vulnerable but still this duo was formulated in 1991 and they collected a point
in their second match at Kiawah Island.
After a gap of six years, the pair returned and earned two points out of three for their captain, Seve Ballesteros. The same happened in 2002 and they earned two-and-a half points out of three. Their partnership stretched for over 11 years but now Monty
is himself the captain of European Ryder Cup team. Therefore, this time the ball is out of his court.
9) Rory McIlroy & Graeme McDowell
Rory McIlroy and Graeme McDowell were coupled for the Vivendi Trophy in 2009 but at that time they gave an impression that they have been playing together since ages. The combination of expressive energy from McIlroy and the calming persona of McDowell worked
wonders. It would be hard to see why Montgomerie would split them in the 2010 Ryder Cup.
10) Tiger Woods & Phil Mickelson
As individuals they may be legends but at the Ryder Cups they seem disastrous. Tiger Woods and Phil Mickelson are probably the most experienced players competing for this season’s Cup. Surely, they would have grasped the trick of Ryder Cup play by now!
Both of them got paired for one day and that was total disaster. The first tee saw both of them aim their balls out of bounds to make the things easier for the Europeans. The striker, Hal Sutton decided to try them again in the afternoon and they lost once
again by one hole.
