Ten Large Down and out at Wimbledon
Passions ran high following Ten Large Down’s elimination from the williamhill.com English Derby as trainer Diane Henry allegedly became involved in a couple of incidents that have triggered an investigation from the GBGB.
Henry’s Racing Post juvenile winner, who was hugely fancied to make the final in the competition, could only manage fourth place behind Romeo Reason in the fifth heat of the night.
In the aftermath of the race, Henry, according to reports on various greyhound message boards, threw the lead at Ten Large Down in the pick-up area, something that the trainer later denied, and started an angry tirade at the star attraction of her kennels.
Henry was apprently involved in an on-the-track altercation with a parader as the six greyhounds were being taken back to the kennels.
She told the Racing Post: “I do admit that emotions were running high after the race. Ten Large Down is a superstar, and he didn’t have the chance to shine from trap six after totally missing his break.
“I was confident this boy could have gone all the way, and I was absolutely gutted. Somebody said something – I think it was along the lines of ‘what goes around, comes around’, and I reacted. The comments were well out of order. It just seems like people have been wanting to destroy me and the dog ever since we started having a bit of success together.
“As for people on internet forums saying I threw the lead at Ten Large Down at the pick-up, they must be absolutely mad. Yes, I threw the lead down on the track – I’m a very passionate person – but not at the dog."
Barry Faulkner, newly-appointed GBGB chief executive, confirmed that “an incident had been reported to the local stewards, and the GBGB would look into the matter this week”.
