Ten men Philadelphia Union shock San Jose Earthquakes 1-0 – Major League Soccer news
Major League Soccer outfit http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Philadelphia-Union-c40231 has startled everyone in the league circles since the start of their second ever MLS season. The team had remained on the top of the Eastern Conference for the third, fourth and fifth week. Even now they chase
New York Red Bulls at the top of the conference, who are just one point ahead of the Union. This Saturday’s match was no different as the home team walked out of PPL Park with three points against San Jose Earthquakes.
The most surprising aspect of the win was not the team’s inferior experience, rather the fact that Union were a man down for the entire second half; centre-back Jordon Harvey was issued a controversial red card in the 41st minute, which ignited
a game winning spark in the U. The players surrounded the referee protesting against the wrong call, however, the decision stood and the player was made to leave the field.
The Union, however, turned the tables and took the game home through a penalty-kick, which was converted by Sebastian Le Toux. The Sons of Ben, the Union’s fan club, grew wild in ecstatic celebrations.
“He was obviously upset at halftime,” Union defender http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/Danny-Califf-c10200 said of Harvey. “But when we came up with a win, he was the first one to congratulate everybody. I think he really felt relief and a little weight off his shoulders, even though he didn’t
do anything to really deserve it.”
The quakes might have thought of the 10-men Zolos as an opportunity, but Peter Nowak thought otherwise. The Union came in the second half with revenge on their minds and it was evident in the next 45 minutes. Despite being a man down, the team controlled
the game the entire second half. http://www.senore.com/Football-soccer/San-Jose-Earthquakes-c40434 found little room to test Faryd Mondragon, who kept yet another clean sheet.
The Union players bossed the pitch and in addition to the penalty-kick, they created good openings in the Quakes’ defence. “I think they dropped off quite a bit,” Califf said of San Jose. “Maybe they thought they’d be able to dictate more of the game because
they were up a man, but they sat back a little too much and allowed us the space to play. We played with a lot of confidence.”
The team continues to surprise everyone in MLS as they move to the elite class in the Eastern Conference with another game to their credit. The team is just one point short of the current leaders RBNY, whom they have already thrashed at the same site, PPL
Park.
The next match for the team comes later this week when they visit Jeld-Wen Field to play Portland Timbers on May 6.
