Ten-year-old Latanna Stone to play in the US Women’ Amateur
In a surprising turn of affairs, ten-year-old Latanna Stone has qualified for the US Women’s Amateur.
Latanna Stone belongs to Valrico, Fla., and is a fifth grade student. At this young age, she has accomplished what many amateurs twice her age dream about.
She short a score of 70 and won the medallist honour at the qualifying match of the US Women’ Amateur. She became the youngest person to ever qualify for any USGA event.
Another surprising fact is her number of wins so far. She has won an incredible 102 tournaments. Granted that these were minor tournaments, a record of 102 wins is nothing trivial.
At the Wanderers Club, she played her qualifier for the US Women’ Amateur. Her amazing performance stunned the players and spectators alike. Some experts say that the major credit goes to her coach, Charlotta Sorenstam.
Charlotta Sorenstam is the younger sister of the highly respected golfer, Annika Sorenstam. Stone trains at the River Hills Country Club with her and she has been instrumental in correcting some flaws in Stone’s technique.
This year, USGA Women’ Amateur will be a hotly contested event that will provide fans and spectators great entertainment. Starting from August 6, the event will last till August 12 and will showcase the best women amateur golf talent.
The first two days are dedicated to stroke play events that will generate 64 players. These 64 players will be the cream of the contestants and will actually play the final rounds of the USGA Women’ Amateur.
The final rounds will comprise of match play format. A match play tree will be utilized to pair the contestants. Each contestant has to beat the player she is paired with to progress up the tree. The final match will be held on the last day of the tournament.
Given the ever increasing talented players who will participate in the event, many experts are skeptical about the chances of the young Latanna Stone. She might be a rising star, but there will be other players who have the advantage of age and strength
over her.
