Tennessee State volleyball team beats Murray State University Racers by 3-1: Volleyball News
Following the loss of the opening set, the Tigers of Tennessee State University came thundering back to beat the Murray State University volleyball team in the next three sets. They posted 3-1 (23-25, 25-16, 25-23, 25-17) victory over Racers at Kean Hall
in Nashville, Tennessee on Friday, October 7.
The loss of key match moved the Racers to 4-15 on the season and to 4-4 in OVC action, while the winning team improved to 9-6 record with 5-3 OVC.
Shaquita Williams recorded 22 kills for Tennessee State and was the most effective player in the team. Danielle Howell and Terakka Walker also did well and supported Tigers with 12 kills apiece. Erika Moss, Britani Hathorn, and Calasia Williams also staged
good action on the court. Moss added 56 assists and clipped 18 digs, while Hathorn and Williams added 16 and 13 digs, respectively.
Murray State struggled with Cassy Woolverton, who notched double-digits in kills with 11. On defence side, Kayleah Sauer led the team with 18 digs.
With four lead-changes, the opening set of the match looked like a heated competition. The Racers built up an early 13-10 lead but the Tigers quickly responded with a 4-0 run and pushed the scores to 17-14. The Racers hit back strongly and re-gained the
lead at 19-18 and seemed quite confident. The see-saw battle continued, while the situation remained un-decided until the end. Finally MSU hit the mark with a final 2-0 run and sealed the first set win at 25-23.
Tennessee State side regrouped in the second set and made a strong opening. They hit powerfully and dominated Racers with a 25-16 lead. The Tigers recorded 18 kills in the second set, while the Racers could only register eight kills. TSU’s .400 hitting percentage
allowed them to capture second set margin of nine points at 25-16.
Tigers continued with their spirited effort and picked up an early lead in the third set. They worked out great spikes and hindered the performance of MSU with solid blocks. They took the score to 14-9 but Racers hit a 4-0 run to catch up with the Tigers.
They shortened the gap of points and tied the score at 23-all. Nevertheless, Tigers proved to be too good for third set win at 25-23.
The fourth set was also closely contested and the opening phase saw a tie of scores at 7-7 and both teams looked remarkably consistent in adding points. However, Tennessee State gradually got better and pushed the Racers behind. They stretched the gap of
points via back-to-back attacks and managed to claim the third set at 25-17.
