Tennessee Titans Kenny Britt arrested and charged after police chase – NFL news
Kenny Britt, wide receiver for the Tennessee Titans, was arrested on Tuesday afternoon on charges of obstructing governmental function, lying to an officer hindering apprehension and eluding a police officer after a car chase through his hometown of Bayonne,
New Jersey.
A spokesman for the police department in Bayonne confirmed that Britt was arrested and charged with eluding an officer being a third-degree felony offence and the other two as misdemeanours.
Another passenger in the vehicle, 23-year-old Jerel Lord of Bayonne, was arrested on three criminal charges. He was charged with obstructing governmental function, resisting arrest and marijuana possession.
Since the National Football League imposed a lockout upon their players, Britt is the 10th player to have been arrested. Britt was back home because the teams are not permitted to have any sort of contact with their players during the lockout,
meaning that there are no off-season programs going on with any teams.
The incident occurred at around 4:30 PM local time, when a police officer clocked Britt driving his blue Porsche at 71 miles per hour in a zone where the maximum speed limit was 50 miles per hour. When the officer entered the road to pursue the vehicle,
Britt began driving recklessly, swerving in and out of traffic, before exiting the road into local neighbourhoods. The vehicle was then spotted in a local neighbourhood with Lord and Britt walking away from the vehicle.
The officer then began questioning the two after ordering them to stop. Lord and Britt both denied that they had been in the vehicle. During questioning, Lord fled on foot but was then stopped by a pursuing officer one block away. The police officer had
recognised Britt as a member of the Titans team, with Britt later admitting that the Porsche was his after being asked about the licence plates of the car. The car was registered in Tennessee and had Tennessee plates. However, he said that he was not the driver
of the vehicle.
Both Lord and Britt were released after being summoned to a court hearing at Hudson County Superior Court in New Jersey which will take place in the near future.
