Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak content with QB Jake Locker as offence leader – NFL News
Tennessee Titans’ first-year offence leader, quarterback Jake Locker, has won words of endorsement from coach Mike Munchak after 37-3 routing of the Miami Dolphins on Sunday (Nov. 11).
It was first game of Locker on return from a shoulder injury, which had forced him on the sidelines for quite a few games after the season opener when he suffered the blow for the first time. He returned to play another game but only to aggravate his injury
and then was made to rest for the next few weeks.
Coach Mike said he was pleased with the performance of the first-time offence leader, although he did not have to throw the ball as much as he could have done without any mistakes by the Dolphins. The turnovers were the main reasons for quick scoring points.
He said:
“He was smart - he threw about four balls away when no one was open. He could have forced things and created a turnover because he felt 'I had to make a play here or there or I had to do something,' and he didn't do any of those things. That's rare for a
quarterback who hasn't played in five weeks.”
He added:
“He [Locker] handled the run game very well, checking us in and out of plays. They were blitzing off both edges. He handled himself very well with the protections. He knew where to go.”
Locker finished the game with completion of nine out of 21 passes for 122 yards. He was less busy because the opportunities presented themselves to the Titans who capitalised them on fully.
It is first time that Munchak has gone out of way to support the young quarterback after he won the leadership role from veteran Matt Hasselbeck through a competition in the preseason.
Earlier, there were concerns that Hasselbeck should not have been put through the competition because he had led the team to many glorious victories in the past, including last year, when they were able to rebound on the 6-10 season earlier to finish 9-7
and fell just short of reaching the playoffs.
Apparently, the coach was not pleased either about the quarterback situation but now he appears to be satisfied.
