Tennessee Titans’ coach Mike Munchak fully backs Jake Locker at Matt Hasselbeck’s place – NFL News
Tennessee Titans’ coach Mike Munchak has ruled out chances to revert the offence leadership role from recently named leader quarterback Jake Locker back to incumbent Matt Hasselbeck in a non-injury scenario.
In a talk on NFL AM programme, the coach categorically clarified Jake is the leader and there is no way back to former setting when keys of Titans’ offence were with Matt.
Mike said:
"I think Jake is going to have some ups and downs as any quarterback does in the NFL, but being a young guy he'll have some. He's shown us when he's had a bad day or a bad throw, he's come back in that same game and made better decisions and made plays.
So I think this is a situation where we're very confident in him."
He added:
"We feel he's won the position and he's ready to go, so we'll definitely hang with him unless there was, like you said, probably an injury situation."
Although Matt was seen to have competed well with Jake to retain the leading role, the latter emerged strongly on the depth chart in closing period of the contest and was eventually named as a starter for this season. He performed reasonably well in the
last preseason game, proving that the coach's choice was credible.
Interestingly, Matt has not offered any comments on him being pushed back at a backup position. Almost both players are equally rich in talent, as was reflected from their past season’s performances. It is not clear if Matt will accept the backup role or
else ask for his trade to another team in the league.
The Titans are also quiet on a possibility of entering a trade arrangement for Matt with any team, which should clearly be an option for them after the coach’s denial of the likelihood of the incumbent getting starting role again.
It is pertinent to recall here that Matt’s career with Titans was put in doubts earlier this year when owner Bud Adams attempted to explore hiring of former Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning, who was available on the free agency, and later joined
the Denver Broncos.
