Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak reiterates backing to QB Jake Locker as offence leader – NFL News
Tennessee Titans coach Mike Munchak has reiterated his support to first-year offence leader quarterback Jake Locker despite the fact that the player has remained lower than expectations in the initial couple of games which have reduced the team to 0-2 start
to the new season.
Some relevant circles of the team have started questioning Jake’s ability to sustain in the leading role for the entire season, citing his performance of the initial two games as a worrisome sign.
They think former leader Matt Hasselbeck, who lost the role to Jake in the preseason quarterbacks competition, can still do better on the starting line, irrespective of the fact that he got an opportunity in the first game, when Jake was sent on the sidelines
with an injury scare, but the veteran could not capitalise on it.
The coach does not buy into these claims. He thinks the two-game loss can no way determine potential of the player and that he still has a belief in him. There is no reason why the leadership role should not be left to Jake for the entire season, the official
believes.
Although Locker started the season rather well against the New England Patriots despite being sidelined halfway through due to an injury, his next game was definitely below even an average performance. This does not scare the coach and he aims to work with
Locker on some of mistakes which he had committed but could have easily avoided.
The Titans have to win the next few games to consolidate their position on the league’s points table given their rivals the Houston Texans have won their both games while the Indianapolis Colts have too surprisingly opened their winning account, and further
lapses can  certainly push them far behind in the teams’ standings.
As noted by Munchak, a change in the squad which the coach has ruled out or replacing the offence leader is less likely to make a difference for the team as far as their victory chances are concerned. The team has to click together as a unit and contribution
from all players in the individual capacities will be as important as performance of the quarterback or a player at any other position.
