Tennessee Titans land $43 million, 5-year extension to CB Jason McCourty – NFL News
Cornerback Jason McCourty has won a five-year, $43 million contract extension from the Tennessee Titans that will ensure his stay with the team through to 2017.
Both stakeholders have confirmed signing of the deal on their part respectively, apparently pleased over outcome of the deal negotiations that did not last much longer before the parties reached an agreement on fresh terms.
According to official confirmation, formal signing of the fresh contract took place just before Titans’ game against the Arizona Cardinals on Thursday. The payout to the player under fresh terms includes $20 million guaranteed money while rest of terms were
not made public by both sides.
The signing nevertheless has come as an important and timely development for the Titans given the team is lacking strength at the defensive positions. A day earlier, the team waived veteran defensive tackle Shaun Smith. The move surprised many commentators
because it had come at a time when the team was very thin on the defensive line.
Following exit of Smith, a question of uncertainty started emerging around prospects of Jason. Although there was no possibility of him being put on waivers, without receiving the extension he could have hit a phase of instability as far as immediate future
of his career was concerned.
His signing of fresh terms is expected to improve the situation for both, the player and team, in the shorter to longer run. Most importantly, the player has peace of mind and can consume all the energies and time to improve his form.
Jason has been playing for the Titans since his selection out of Rutgers in the 2009 draft. His rookie deal was set to expire at the end of this season. He has played a crucial part in the team’s performances and wins.
The Titans have also posed confidence into his abilities and placed him on the starting line for 24 games, out of total 42 games, which he has played for them. His record consists of 182 tackles, a sack, a fumble recovery, four interceptions, one touchdown
and two forced fumbles.
