Tennessee Titans let quarterback Vince Young leave
Tennessee Titans owner, Bud Adams has said that it is time to let quarterback Vince Young leave the team, and try to find a new quarterback for the franchise.
The Titans said in a statement released late Wednesday that Young would not be in the team’s line up next season, and that they are still evaluating the Titans coaching staff. Adams said, "We have two critical decisions to make, the direction of the coaching
staff and the future at the quarterback position. They are separate issues to me and will be dealt with separately."
Adams is the one who drafted Young as the number three pick in the first round of the 2006 NFL Draft, saying on draft day that “VY is my guy.” However, with the team’s senior executive vice president and general manager flying out to meet with Adams, the
owner says that Young is no longer the quarterback that the franchise is seeking.
Young has won 30 games and lost 17 in his five seasons in the NFL. However, he has won 13 and lost 14 against teams that have won at least half of their games, with a .500 rating or better. He has also caused problems for the team in terms of injuries, leadership,
and work ethic.
Young suffered an injury to his thumb at the end of November, which ended his season. However, it was what happened in the aftermath of the injury, which sealed the deal for Young. He harshly criticised Head Coach Jeff Fisher after throwing his shoulder
pads and jersey into the stands, after which he stormed off to the locker room.
The 27-year-old told a local newspaper that he was a bit upset over the decision to let him go, but thanked Fisher and Adams for the opportunity to win the Super Bowl. He also said that he had no grudge against the head coach, but believed that Fisher never
felt as if he was his guy or trusted him.
"Everything was my fault. But that's over now. I wish coach Fisher and Bud Adams and all my coaches and team-mates the best," Young said. He later said on his Twitter account that, “I look forward to a new beginning and bringing my talents to a new team.”
Adams said that he had requested General Manager Mike Reinfeldt to embark on the process of finding the team’s next quarterback, and also thanked Young for his contributions to the Titans squad.
"These kinds of decisions are never easy and this is especially true for this particular player. I certainly wish that things would have worked out better, but I think it is best for the franchise that we move on at this point," Adams said.
The news caught the rest of the team by surprise. They had been asked a couple of weeks ago if they believed that Fisher and Young would be able to put aside their differences and produce a winning team.
"That's crazy," running back Chris Johnson said. "That's something I would have never expected. When you looked at his on-field play; he produced. He produced a lot of wins."
The Titans have yet to find another quarterback, and are still deciding if it would be in the team’s best interest to keep Fisher as head coach.
