Tennessee Titans likely to waive LB Will Witherspoon after training camp – NFL News
Tennessee Titans’ veteran linebacker, Will Witherspoon, faces bleak pro future amid increasing impossibility of him making to the post-training camp 53-man roster of the team.
Titans head to training camp later this month and under the league’s rules, they have to cut short the roster to 53 players. With the team going for another second-round on the outside linebacker position, Zach Brown, it is difficult they
will retain Will.
The player, who is turning 32 this year, is into the last year of his contract. He is due to earn $3.5 million this season and is not that costly option for the team on the either side of the possibility.
Yet he stands a chance for another shot at his position this year if the rookie somehow disappoints the managers and coaches at training camp.
It is less likely for the team to go for removal of the rookie from the roster straightaway and he will definitely have the benefit of doubt or advantage of being a newbie.
Titans are expected to be more patient with the rookie as far as his performance is concerned, as it is natural for any first-year player to take some time to immerse into the pro responsibility.
Will also has the lingering issue of the deal. He is almost done with his previous contract, and the team must be preparing to sign him an extension to prolong his stay in Tennessee. The second option, his release, looks to be more realistic
and suitable for them.
In a couple of seasons, Will's age is also going to be a factor affecting his long career prospects, and any team can be less willing to make a long-term commitment to him.
Irrespective of his uncertain prospects, Will is confirmed for training camp, and since stakes are not as higher for him as for his young competitor, he is not worried about his future.
Some commentators believe he can have another couple of years’ opportunity from any team in the league. He has not pondered upon the question of retirement.
