Tennessee Titans open to starter’s change but DE Derrick Morgan leads chart – NFL News
The Tennessee Titans have said they will be flexible with the choice about their defence starter this season, leaving selection of the leader dependent on the defensive schemes their opponents apply against them.
Defensive end Derrick Morgan, who is expected to be the starter at present, has spoken of an uncertainty amid claims by safety Jerry Gray that he is the starter.
Derrick said:
"You guys need to talk to (defensive coordinator) Jerry Gray. He told me I'm the starter, and that's all I need to worry about."
Coach Mike Munchak later clarified:
"He's not being limited in playing time. We see him as a starter and playing a lot. It just depends which package is on the field."
Mike added:
"That's why defence is so different. If they're going out there with three wide receivers then you're going to have a different corner starting. So, he's a guy that we consider a starter."
Morgan’s reference to the uncertainty about the starting defensive position can be true due to the fact that player has been working with second-team line during most part of training camp.
His teammate DE Pannel Egboh has been working with first-time most of the time, while safety Jerry’s claimed has emerged out of nowhere, as the player is nowhere in the picture of the starting role.
With the confirmation from Munchak that Morgan remains their leader in normal circumstances, the player has spoken of his aims of getting double-digit sacks as a minimum standard of their performance.
He said:
"The goal of a defensive end is always to get double-digit sacks, and God willing, I'll get to that."
Morgan nevertheless realises that expectations from him as a leader will be higher this season. He has already earned a couple of years’ experience since being selected in the 2010 draft.
Also, Titans’ defence performance had been exposed last year by falling far below the mark. Even coach admitted they will have to work hard on the defensive positions to achieve better results this year. Morgan said he clearly aims for a better run this
year.
