Tennessee Titans starting QB competition: Matt Hasselbeck vows giving tough fight to Jake Locker
Tennessee Titans’ veteran quarterback Matt Hasselbeck has shown so far he will not go down in front of the competitor Jake Locker easily as the fight for the starting job between the two continues unabated at the team’s training camp.
Matt had another successful day on Thursday, completing 17 out of 22 throws with an interception, discarding the belief that Jake had the odds in his favour during the initial phase of the camp. After all, the veteran has many years of experience on his
resume and he knows how better a situation like this one can be handled.
Also, this is not the end of the competition for the starting QB position. It is expected to close on August 23 when coach Mike Munchak comes with the final choice regarding their offence leader.
Mike during one of his earlier talks had disclosed that a majority of inquiries he received regarding the starting QB competition were about if Jake is going to be given the leading role but now the on-ground realities seem changing very fast.
Both players have done well so far at their ends, and since the fight continues it is very difficult to determine who is in the lead at the moment.
Hasselbeck said he is getting better and sounded to be very confident, apparently without any signs of concerns due to the competition. He said:
"I could do better. I could definitely do better. Calling the plays better, new concepts and then obviously making better decisions and better throws."
He added:
"That's not hard for me at all. I just have not taken that (worried) approach ever, really. Maybe aside from my first year in the league when I was comparing every throw I had to Brett Favre. That was a little depressing, so I came up with a new strategy."
Jake also appears as determined and up to the challenge as the veteran himself, and almost all commentators agree to the point that the competition is likely to drag on until the last day of the camp. The credit goes to Jake, as it was him who had brought
Matt’s role as a leader into question in the first place.
