Tennessee Titans want linebackers come harder on opponent QBs, produce more sacks-NFL News
The Tennessee Titans have said that they want to see their defensive players going more aggressive against their opponents from the next season.
As part of their defensive strategy, the team particularly wants its linebackers to go harder and faster after the quarterbacks, producing more sacks.
Jerry Gray, the team’s defensive coordinator, has spoken of his desire to see more sacks coming from linebacker, Akeem Ayers.
Gray told a local newspaper:
"We need Ayers to get some sacks. We need Ayers to have a dominant attitude that, 'You know what? A tackle isn't going to block me. A running back isn't going to block me'."
In the 2011 National Football League (NFL) season, Titans had only 28 sacks, which was the second-lowest of the league.
The team is aware of the fact and aims to improve the situation this year.
Titans could have made it to the playoffs last season, but some unexpected losses pushed backed their chances, making the second phase berth most difficult and at the end impossible for them.
For example, the loss of the game against the previously winless Indianapolis Colts in game 14 of the season proved to be a turning point of their season. They had to wait for their luck at the end, which went against them.
Apparently, Ayers himself has come to the realisation of his problems of last season and looks to rectify them before going into the next.
He said:
"I watched the film from last year and just going off what coach Millard told me about my pass rush, I was doing a lot of things completely wrong. So it's just pretty much tightening up my technique and just pretty much going from there."
Meanwhile, the team also expects defensive end, Derrick Morgan, to perform better this year. The player was unlucky to have lost most of his rookie season (2010) to a torn anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) injury.
The team is pressing him to improve from 2.5 sacks he could manage during the past season.
