Tennessee Titans yet to respond to TE Jared Cook’s fresh deal demand – NFL News
Tennessee Titans’ tight end, Jared Cook, appears set to play the 2012 National Football League (NFL) season under his rookie contract, as the management is yet to respond to his fresh deal demand.
In that case he will earn the NFL’s minimum base salary of $615,000 in last year of his previous deal. He was selected in third round out of the 2009 draft and since then has remained on the initial rookie contract.
He is now coming off a breakout season as his last year’s record consists of 49 passes for total 759 yards and three touchdowns.
Although the player has not boasted his performance of the season to plead for a new contract but still he thinks that taking care of his job is crucial to his game and form prospects.
He, however, unlike many other players in the league, has not hinted at going rebellious against the managers, skipping workout activity or setting any threatening tones.
The player says:
"I would like to stay here. I like Tennessee a lot, but you just kind of block it out and take care of your job. As long as you take care of your job, you’ll be all right. I’m still waiting (to hear), but hopefully soon."
Titans who are yet to even acknowledge his extension request do not look in mood of giving him new contract. This looks even more difficult given the team has already committed $14.4 million to Craig Stevens, the starting tight end of
the team.
Irrespective of the fact that Cook deserves fresh terms, it is difficult to predict start of a negotiation process in the near future. Anything positive happening at this end will most likely occur before training camp.
Titans are about a month away from this year’s training camp and all players are expected to report at least a day before its start. Under the NFL rules, a player can be fined $30,000 for skipping one day of the camp.
The possibility of fine may not arise in Cook’s case as the player is most likely to hit the camp even if he is unable to win a new contract from Titans.
