Tennessee volleyball team defeats Louisiana State University by 3-1
The number 23 ranked Tennessee volleyball team had a match with the Louisiana State University (LSU) on September 30, at the Maravich Center which was jam packed with 1,581 spectators. The two teams fought with each other long and hard but as the match reached
its close, Tennessee had earned itself a win by 3-1.
The first set of the match saw LSU take some time to get into their rhythm. Tennessee took advantage of the fact and were able to get the lead and stick with it till the end of the set. The second set saw both the teams go neck to neck with each other but
LSU prevailed in equalising the match. The third set was tough in the beginning but Tennessee was able to gain the upper hand in the end while they smothered LSU in the fourth set and won the match at the following final set scores: 17-25, 25-23, 21-25 and
14-25.
The head coach of the LSU team, Fran Flory, made the following comments at the press conference after the team had won the match: "When we walked in the building having the crowd start a 'Geaux Tigers' chant from side-to-side before the match even started,
I thought this arena could have been electric tonight. I think at times it was, but we did not really carry the load on the court for the fans. I have to say thank you to the students and thank you to our fans. They stuck with us and provided the right atmosphere.
I wish we could have played a little better and got them really excited."
The highest number of kills made in the match were by the Tennessee player, Kelsey Robinson, who scored a total of 20 kills. In all, the hitting percentage of the Lady Vols stood to be at .333. On the other hand, LSU were able to answer back with 11 kills
made by Desiree Elliott as well as Madie Jones.
The first set of the match initially started on level terms but eventually the Tennessee side was able to pull up ahead at 10-5. After this point, LSU began to dwindle behind as Tennessee was able to bag the opening set of the game at 25-17.
The loss of the first set of the game triggered the Tigers into action and they were able to meet the Tennessee side head on. Before long, LSU had won the set at 25-23.
However, that was the only moment of glory that the Tigers could achieve as Tennessee asserted themselves in the third as well as the fourth sets of the match winning them at 25-21 and 25-14 respectively.
