Question:

Tennis, stepping up when serving?

I read in a tennis magazine that, to get more power on your serve, you step forward with your back foot to your front foot to get more power on your serve.

I tried this and found myself falling into my shot. Am I doing it correctly?

  1. Many of the serve and volley players of the past used that motion. You should be making contact with the ball while it is in line with your front foot. Practice tossing the ball in line of that foot. As you bring your arm up you racquet head should also be going up. Watch this clip. Remember to keep your eye on the ball and don't close your eyes and drop your head. You should see the ball making contact with your racquet head.

  2. l found this site it should answer your question :)

  3. Just keep it simple. I know what you are talking about and I don't really like it. Too many moving parts. Instead, keep your feet how it is but just bend your knees. The power comes from the uncoiling action of your body and then transferring that energy through the snap of your arm. I wouldn't alter your serve. If you want more power, just bend your knees, and snap your shoulder, elbow and wrist quick. It's all in the snap.

  4. I read the same thing and tried it out and I have found slightly greater power while not a huge impact on the speed of the serve. While saying that I mean that it seems to move slightly faster through the air but my opponents are not really phased more. I still do it because I feel that it helps the rhythm of my serve. Do what feels better and most comfortable to you. Also, you can watch pros like Federer. They have incredibly different serves. I don't believe that Federer steps up on his serves, but he still gets great power, that is because he gets such a deep knee bend and hits the ball at the top of his jump. Hope that helps.
