Tennis: Bryans Brothers win their tenth title in China; Tursunov/Seppi encounter defeat in Tokyo
The top seed duo of Mike Bryan and Bob Bryan grabbed its tenth crown with a two-setter win over Marcin Matkowski and Mariusz Fyrstenberg in the final of the 2010 China Open Men’s doubles Competition on Sunday. The final match score was 6-1, 7-6(5).
The Bryans while commenting on their performance after the match said on Sunday, "The numbers have been great for us this year. To win our tenth title on 10/10/10 is pretty crazy too! I was aware of that before the match. It feels awesome and hopefully we can keep the momentum going through the rest of the year."
The unbeaten American pair captured their fourth successive tour-level crown, following wins in Cincinnati, Toronto as well as the United States Open and thus extended their winning streak to a total of eighteen clashes undefeated. Both of them received five hundred ATP World Tour ranking points as a result of winning the title in Beijing.
The Americans, after successfully qualifying for the season ending Barclays ATP World Tour in London are now attempting to be crowned ATP World Tour Doubles winner on the second occasion in a row. They have had a tremendous year, lifting their eighth and ninth major tournaments in Melbourne and New York and thus setting the record of the Open Era for most doubles crowns with win in Los Angeles.
"2010 has been a dream year, ten titles so far. I do not think we have ever had ten at this mark. We have never been perfect, so we are really happy. In Shanghai next week we want to go in there and play well and win it. We still have four tournaments the rest of the year and we are trying to go for No. 1. If we do well there we can maybe clinch it. We are hoping,” said Mike Bryan after his victory on Sunday.
The Americans broke on a total of three occasions, as they raced to a lead of one set over their Polish foes on Sunday. They then fought back from a deficit of 3-5 in the following set and in the end won the match after a time period of seventy two minutes in Beijing.
In an another action in Tokyo, Jean Julien Rojer and Eric Butorac captured their first ATP World Tour doubles crown with a two-setter win over Dmitry Tursunov and Andreas Seppi in the final of the Rakuten Open Men’s Doubles Competition in Tokyo.
The Curacao native and American were appearing in their second final together, after ending as finalist earlier in Los Angeles at the hands of Bryan Brothers. They received ranking points of 500 along with prize money of $76,950 as the champions of the doubles competition on Sunday.
In a title battle between two unseeded pairs, Julien and Eric converted four of their ten break point chances as they sealed victory in fifty eight minutes on Sunday. They made their way into the final of the 2010 Japan Open after getting the better of Horia Tecau and Robert Lindstedt and lost just a single set throughout the week in Tokyo.
The 29-year-old Eric grabbed his eighth ATP World Tour crown from eleven finals, whereas Julien who is also 29 years of age, lifted his first ATP World Tour trophy after previously ending as finalists on six occasions.
The runner-up pair Tursunov of Russia and Andreas from Italy, on the other hand, had hammered down the fourth seed Michal Mertinak and Frantisek Cermak to advance into their first ATP World Tour title battle together. Andreas, as a result of losing on Sunday, slipped to a final record of 0-3, whereas Tursunov dropped to a 4-4 mark.
