Tennis China Open 2010: Angelique Kerber upsets Agnieszka Radwanska
Just a day after the last year’s winner Svetlana Kuznetsova fell out of the WTA China’s Open Women’s competition, the player who ended as finalist back in 2009; Agnieszka Radwanska was also sent home on Monday, losing at the hands of Angelique Kerber.
Angelique, whose only top twenty victory came at the grass court Grand Slam tournament earlier this season at the All England Club in London over the world number fifteen Shahar Peer, was just a game away from falling down to the eleventh ranked and sixth
seeded foe, Radwanska trailing 5-4 during the second set and 5-4 in the following set. However, Agnieszka served for the clash in the third but managed to escape on both occasions to earn her career best victory on Monday. The match concluded in a time period
of two hours and fifty six minutes in Beijing.
Agnieszka fell to Radwanska in the previous season’s title battle, which was her very first career defeat in a final. She was 4-0 before that clash and now stands at 4-2, having lost in the San Diego final in 2010, also to Svetlana. Angelique’s victory would
have been a top ten win just a day earlier, as Agnieszka dropped from number nine to number eleven on the new WTA world rankings on Monday.
Another crowd darling who bundled out of the WTA China Open Women’s competition on Monday was Peng Shuai of China, who despite of having a lead of two sets, lost the match in the end at the hands of her Italian tennis opponent Sara Errani in a total of three
sets in Beijing. The final match score was 1-6, 6-4, 6-1. With Zheng Jie unable to take part in this season’s China Open event, Peng was China’s number two hope in Beijing.
In the men’s event at the China Open, a total of five singles clashes will be contested on Monday featuring John Isner of America, Philipp Kohlschreiber, Tsung-Hua Yang, Tomas Berdych and Michael Berrer. Leading the draw is definitely the last season’s champ
and world number two Novak Djokovic from Serbia, who was also a runner up at the year’s final major, the United States Open this year in New York.
