Tennis China Open 2010: Caroline Wozniacki and Andy Murray advance in Beijing
Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark is set to become the new top ranked tennis ace in the world after defeating Petra Kvitova to advance into the quarter final round of the WTA 2010 China Open Competition on Thursday.
The Dane got the better of Petra in two sets and will overtake Serena Williams of America when the new rankings will be released on Monday. The final match score was 6-3 6-2.
Caroline after the match while commenting on her new career high rankings of world number one said, “This is a real huge step for me. To be world number one has always been a dream for me."
The 20-year-old Caroline is the 20th woman to lead the rankings list since their inception back in 1975. However, she is the third contender in the last two seasons to reach the top level without grabbing a major trophy so far in her career.
Jelena Jankovic of Serbia and Dinara Safina from Russia are still without a Grand Slam crown, despite of topping the rankings back in 2008 and 2009 respectively. However, Caroline was of the view that her next target is to win a major title.
Serena Williams, who has held the number one position for a total of one hundred and twenty three weeks throughout her career, has not contested since capturing her thirteenth major crown at Wimbledon back in July.
The 29-year-old Williams could make her return next week at the WTA Championship in Linz, as told by the organizers on Thursday.
In other clashes on Thursday, second seed Vera Zvonareva of Russia missed the opening set versus her compatriot foe Maria Kirilenko, however, fought back for a three-setter victory. The final match score was 5-7 6-4 6-2.
Meanwhile, Ana Ivanovic of Serbia defeated her Russian opponent Elena Dementieva in a three-setter clash on Thursday. The final match score was 7-6 (7-2) 7-6 (7-4).
Local favourite and ninth seed Li Na toppled Angelique Kerber of Germany in two sets to seal victory in forty eight minutes on Thursday. The final match score was 6-2 6-0.
Anastasija Sevastova from Latvia had a walkover versus the thirteen seed Nadia Petrova from Russia.
In the men’s side, Andy Murray bounced back from behind in both sets to dispatch off Albert Montanes of Spain in two sets to advance into the quarter final round of the China Open in Beijing. The final match score was 7-5, 6-3.
The top ranked Brit trailed 3-5 in the opening set, before grabbing the next four games to earn a lead of one set on Thursday. The 24-year-old Albert, winner of two ATP World Tour crowns in Stuttgart and Estoril in 2010, again broke to secure a lead of 2-0 in the decisive set. Andy once again smashed back, though, winning six of the next seven games to win in one hour and thirty six minutes in Beijing.
"I was leaving the ball pretty short, so he was able to dictate a lot of the points. So that is why I struggled a bit early on, however I played a little bit better towards the end. I was a little bit more solid than he was, particularly in the second set, and that was probably the main difference, but there was not too much in it,” explained Andy on Thursday.
The 23-year-old Murray, as a result of this victory will next meet Ivan Ljubicic, who got the better of Alexandr Dolgopolov in two sets to advance into his fourth ATP World Tour quarter of the year. The final match score was 6-3, 7-6(2).
