Tennis: Former professional Chanda Rubin searches through ashes
Former American tennis professional Chanda Rubin was watching TV during a heavy rainstorm in Lafayette, when an alarm at her house went off to signal a miserable twenty-four hours that followed. Rubin's 5,500 square foot house
burned down on Wednesday night. Chanda spent most of Thursday sifting through her belongings apart from assessing the damage caused by the fire. Furthermore, the house was heavily damaged by the blaze that was put out in an hour.
Initially, when the security company called to find out what had gone wrong, Chanda failed to detect the problem until the lights started acting strangely while smoke and water could be smelled upstairs. Rubin stated that she saw
a haze come out of a recessed light, which is when she decided to get out. She went on to add that she did not want to be trapped inside the house. It was not before she went outside and saw smoke that she realized that the roof was on fire.
"I'm like a vagabond now. I don't have a home. "Family and friends helped tremendously, of course. Initially, you think about anything you can salvage, your personal items. At that point, it's the basics, just see what you can
take. I was able to get my jewelry, some pictures and some important papers, although there is some water damage to them," stated Rubin.
Chanda told her computer was gone and that she wishes she had it. She also stated that she lost a couple of salvaged trophies of hers, but thankfully, most of her trophies are at her parents' house.
Additionally, Rubin stated, "I didn't think I would go through it again so soon. If I rebuild, it will be in River Ranch. I love it here. It really hasn't hit me yet. Tonight and tomorrow, when I have some down time, (at) the next
step beyond today, it will probably kick in. Then it will get a little tougher. I'll just take things one step at a time."
