Tennis Guangzhou Open & WTA Bell Challenge Title snatchers
The Australian tennis ace, Jarmila Groth won her first WTA trophy with a comfortable win over her Russian tennis foe, Alla Kudryavtseva in the final of the Guangzhou Open in southern China on Sunday. The final match score was 6-1, 6-4.
The 23-year-old Jarmila fired a total of eleven aces against Kudryavtseva to grab the $US37, 000 ($39,000) champion’s cheque. As a result of this victory, Jarmila also managed to even their last meeting at the Indian Wells two years ago, back in 2008.
The top-seeded Australian reached the main draw at the Guangzhou Open, without even dropping a single set and comfortably won the title battle in the end on Sunday.
She broke Alla’s serve on a total of five occasions on her way to the trophy. The 22-year-old Russian tennis sensation, Alla Kudryavtseva was also contesting in her first final of the WTA tour.
Jarmila, a native of Slovakia became the citizen of Australia previous season after becoming the wife of Sam Groth, an ATP player, who is ranked number fifty five in the world by the Association of tennis professionals (ATP) and is also likely to jump into
the top fifty WTA rankings after this title victory.
''It is very exciting to at last reach the top fifty world rankings. I have had some health and injury problems and every time I was close of cracking in the top fifty, I just couldn’t make it in the end,” said Groth on Sunday.
Jarmila is going through her best year since joining the tour back in 2005, with a fourth round appearances at two Grand Slam tournaments in 2010, namely the French Open and the grass court Grand Slam championship at the All England Club.
At the season’s last Grand Slam, the United States Open, the Australian was eliminated in the opening round by the three-time major champion Maria Sharapova, in straight sets.
In another action at the WTA Bell Challenge, Tamira Paszek, a qualifier captured her second WTA tour trophy after brushing aside, Bethanie Mattek-Sands in a thrilling three-setter clash. The final match score was 7-6 (8/6) 2-6 7-5.
The Austrian prevented a total of two set points during the opening set and was down 3-1 in the decisive set before rallying to record a three-setter win in Quebec. The match concluded in a time period of two hours and forty seven minutes.
The former thirty fifth ranked tennis ace, who is currently ranked number 151 in the world after 2009 was wrecked by a couple of injuries, however, her win in Canada is likely to improve her rankings back into the top hundred on the tour.
The 19-year-old told the reporter, “Whenever you win a championship on the very first occasion of your professional life, it always feels special. And so, this trophy is very close to my heart, and I am going to remember it for the rest of my career without
any question.”
She further added, “I also want to thank my entire family along with my friends who have always supported me particularly during my tough time back in 2009.”
It was the third final of Tamira’s professional life. She has previously triumphed in Portoroz as a fifteen year old girl and was also a finalist to Patty Schnyder in Bali back in 2008.
Mattek-Sands made her way into the very first career final in Quebec back in 2008, when she was a finalist to Nadia Petrova in a total of three sets.
Having started the year outside the top 150, Sands, a former thirty seven ranked tennis ace, is likely to come back in the top sixty five after this week.
