I play tennis, and let me tell you, its not a simple sport. Its one thing to know all the rules, tactics, and shots of tennis, its completely different to apply them and master all the shots.

And yes, a caveman can play tennis. But they probably wont be very good.

1)The official rules of tennis are about 35 pages long

2) Much ink has been spilled on the tactics of the game.

3) Even more ink has been spilled on the technique to hit even basic tennis strokes

4) A whole hog more ink has been spilled on the technique to hit more complex shots including -

spin, slice, kick or flat serves,

flat or top spin forehands,

topspin backhands single or double handed

Sliced backhands to produce a variety of spins

Myriad types of volleys

So, No I don't think tennis is simple at all!

tennis is one of the hardest sports to play, you need to be close to perfect and even that ain't good enough as you need that something extra that only natural ability can fulfill. It takes years of training, working out in the gym on your whole body, perfecting technique so you can be consistent, it is a sport that demands alot from your body and mind. Coz tennis is a such a big mental game and you need to be strong mentally to get wins on a regular basis. There are sooo many factors to tennis, and i don't think i even scratched the surface.

Have you ever tried to play? It is not easy at all. It is exhausting and it's hard to make winners. It's not like you just keep hitting the ball wherever you want.

You must be insane. The ATP is full of players that have been playing tennis for 20+ years and still aren't good enough to win big tournaments.
