Tennis Latest: David Ferrer to meet Golubev; Youzhny secures confidence boosting victory
In a match between two Barclays ATP World Tour Finals players, David Ferrer, the fifth seed, got the better of Tomas Berdych in a three setter clash and made his way into the semi final round of the 2010 Malaysian Open Men’s
Competition on Friday. The final match score was 4-6, 7-5, 6-4.
Three spots separate the contenders in the South African Airways 2010 ATP Rankings, giving the victory extra impetus for the World number nine Ferrer. The Spanish tennis ace came from a set behind to tie the clash with a
crucial break of serve during the twelfth game of the second set. He then rallied from a break down at 3-4 in the following set to grab the last three games of the clash and seal his fourth win over the grass court Grand Slam finalist on Friday. The match
concluded in a time period of two hours and twenty eight minutes in Kuala Lumpur.
“It was a very good match for me, perhaps my best of the season. I am happy for that because it was a very tough match. At 4-3 down in the third set I returned really well and when I was 5-4 up he made a few mistakes and
I was able to win,” explained Ferrer.
The twenty eight year old improved to a match record of 48-17 in the year after progressing to his ninth ATP World Tour semi final round. The
Acapulco winner next meets eighth seed Andrev Golubev, who managed to break on four occasions as he surpassed top seed Robin Soderling in a total of two sets. The final match score was 6-3, 6-2. The clash concluded in a time period
of seventy one minutes in Kuala Lumpur.
This loss denied the world number five Soderling the opportunity to add more valuable points to his campaign so as to qualify for the year end Barclays ATP World Tour in London. The twenty six year old, who captured his fifth
ATP World Tour crown in Rotterdam after defeating Youzhny in February, dropped to a match record of 43-16 on the year.
“He played really well. Maybe I was not at my best. He played much better than me, but I wish I could have played a little bit better. There are some big tournaments coming up and my form is good; I’ve played pretty well
for a while now. So I just have to try and forget about this match, re-focus and try to play well in
Beijing and Shanghai,” conceded the Swede after his victory on Friday.
World number fourteen Golubev registered just his second win over a top ten contender as he advanced to his first ATP World Tour semi-final since winning his maiden trophy on clay in
Hamburg.
“Everything was perfect. In the important points I played really well. I’m really happy. I expected, and it was, a really tough match, despite the score line. Against Robin if you get a chance you have to use it because the
top guys don’t miss small opportunities to come back,” declared Golubev.
