Tennis Latest: Igor Andreev & Mikhail Youzhny to play Malaysian Open semi final
Two Russian tennis players, Igor Andreev and Mikhail Youzhny, will meet in an all-Russian semi final clash at the 2010 Malaysian Open Men’s competition after both fought through three sets in their quarter final rounds on
Friday.
Igor, an unseeded player in Kuala Lumpur who was once ranked in the top twenty ATP list, ended the run of his Canadian tennis foe, Milos Raonic, in a three setter clash. The final match score was 6-1, 3-6, 6-3.
The US Open semi finalist Mikhail Youzhny, on the other hand, continued his excellent form by getting the better of his sixth seed opponent Marcos Baghdatis on Friday. The final match score was 6-7 (5-7), 7-5, 6-1.
Mikhail has managed to win two of his three clashes versus the world number 102 compatriot, with their previous meeting in January back in 2009.
Mikhail secured his 37th win of the year in a time period of two hours and forty minutes against Baghdatis on Friday. The Russian managed to break the Cypriot’s serve on a total of seven occasions.
Igor put an end to a run in which Milos won his first two career wins on the tour. Andreev while commenting on his today’s clash said that it was not an easy match. He was of the view that he had to battle quite hard to win
against Milos who played well.
"It was a very tough match. He has got a lot of potential. I am happy with how I played today, I was able to use my chances and earn the win,” said Igor after the match on Friday.
He further added, "It has been a long time since I have played a semi final back in February 14 on clay in Brazil. It is great to play well again and win some matches. It gives you confidence and a great feeling."
In the other quarter final match in Kuala Lumpur, the top seed Swedish ace, Robin Soderling, was hoping for the final four for the second season in a row in a clash versus his eighth seed foe, Andrey Golubev from Kazakhstan.
The grass court Grand Slam runner up third seed Tomas Berdych was also testing himself against David Ferrer from Spain.
