I want to learn how to put depth into my groundstrokes expecially the doublehanded backhand. I got told that adding topspin would help but whenever i put spin on it only reaches the service box or when i try to put a bigger swing into it it goes miles out HEELLP

  1. oh come on... practice makes perfect--but we know that nobody's perfect, ...and so why practice?

If you don't get it right after years of training and practice...I think that you better change sports... like marathon, snow boarding, or emailing... (just kidding!)

  2. Go to a club that has a ball machine, and practice, practice, practice.  Take what you've done in practice sessions and try it during your matches.  That's the best advice I can give you.

  3. I am a USPTA pro, this is a very simple problem to fix, but you must understand before you can actually do it.  Your really only need to do one thing, so forget everything else except for what I tell you!

You cant "add topspin" and hit deeper.  In fact, thats completely wrong, if you add more topspin, the ball will drop quicker.  With more topspin you can hit harder which may feel like you are adding depth, but really you are just hitting hard and the ball is coming down into the court quicker.

In order to really add depth to your strokes you need to lengthen them.  The process of lengthening your stroke will as a result cause you to hit the ball deeper!

How to lengthen your stroke:  Basically the reason you are not hitting the ball deeper is because you are not hitting through the ball.  Im sure you have heard people say this before but it is the one and only reason you are not hitting as deep as you wish.

In order to hit through the ball and be successful you must lower your follow through.  This sounds complicated, and if you think of it the way I just said it, it is going to be difficult.

So this is what you will do:  Go onto the court.  After you are all warmed up you are going to start hitting the ball harder (faster racquet head speed).  When you swing harder you must "aim lower"  In order to aim low, you are physically going to try and hit the ball into the middle of the net.  When you aim for the middle of the net and swing harder, you will ultimately lower your follow though, this will be done without knowing.

So, to break it down, this is what your doing:  Swing harder, and aim for the middle of the net.

This will cause you to follow through low, drive through the ball, and result in a deeper shot.

Try it out and get back to me!

  4. Length of swing (meaning follow through) and your body twist will give you depth.  Your description of top spin and bigger swing are correct.  But often, when people refer to a bigger swing, they mean more power.  Getting depth is not in the power.

    1.  Keep the top spin so it dives back into the court.

    2.  Plant your center of gravity low and twist (uncoil) when you take the shot.  Here, technic is more important than power.

    3.  Follow through should not be abbreviated.

When you power a shot, the tendency is for you to tighten up, and naturally abbreviating your body twist and follow through so it does not give depth to the ball.  Also, the tendency when you power a shot is to use all arm power.  Remeber, your bend and twist before uncoiling to hit the shot is more effective yet less tiresome and prone to error.

  5. Allow every ball to "fall into your strings"; i.e. the ball is moving from high to low (descending with gravity) before you hit it.

Stroke the ball at an angle equal to the angle of the ball's decent; i.e. your stroke and follow-through should moving through space at the same angle that the ball had as it fell into your strings. Take special note here... this fundamental concept is the standard on which most strokes in tennis are built.

Use low to high strokes (always) when hitting neutral groundstroke. This is also the most efficient and effective way to hit most shots in tennis. Low to high strokes usually result in...

                    A. Maximum depth while using minimum energy

                    B. Maximum accuracy during ball-to-racket contact

                    C. Minimum likelihood of mis-hit errors

The racket head should be perpendicular to the flight of the ball at impact. This teaches you to hit neutral groundstroke flat and without spin. Hitting the ball flat and without spin will also help you learn how to hit the ball straight.

Use full strokes when hitting neutral groundstrokes. As a general rule, the racket head should be higher than your head and your arm(s) should be fully extended as you complete your follow-through.

When hitting neutral groundstroke, your forehand and backhand should be mirror images of each other as your racket moves through space. This is because all the fundamentals discussed above apply equally to forehand and backhand. Also, mirror image strokes require that you learn a concept or skill only once since it can be applied to both forehand and backhand in an equal and "mirror-like" fashion.

  6. change your grip handle and hit hard

  7. To get deph use a lot of topspin, it gives u net clearence

maybe ur not using enough spin because it works for a lot of people

u just realy have to brush up the ball as much as u can
