To the dismay of the American tennis fans, world number 11, Andy Roddick, sidelines from the French Open, due to be played next week. Roddick’s persistent injury in his right shoulder has been troubling him for the last few days
and has forced him to withdraw from the second Grand Slam event of the year.
28-year-old American veteran felt pain in his shoulder during the Internazionali BNL d’Italia in Rome last week, withdrawing from the final of the doubles event. His injury also caused him to pull out of the Open de Nice Cote d’Azur
this week, as Roddick hoped to recover and take part in Roland Garros. Unfortunately for his fans all around the world, the hard-hitting American will not be seen in action in the French Open this time.
Roddick has not been in the best of his form during the running ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) season and is still to win a match on clay this year. He suffered early ejection in Madrid and Rome to remain victory-less
on clay courts this year and is running a four-match losing streak overall.
The American had a brilliant start to the current ATP season, making it to the final of the Brisbane International but losing to Robin Soderling of Sweden. Roddick bagged his only championship title of the year at the Regions Morgan
Keegan Championships, where he defeated the Canadian, Milos Raonic in the final. Although his dry run this season continued but a lot was expected from the American veteran in the French Open.
The other player missing out from Roland Garros is the world number 72, Juan Carlos Ferrero of Spain, who has withdrawn from the mega event due to his multiple injuries. The 2003 French Open champion recently made his comeback
to the pro tennis world at Barcelona, after recovering from his left knee and right wrist injury.
He made it to the quarter-final of the tournament but after his opening round defeat at Madrid Open, he was not able to play another event till date. He has played five matches this year, winning three of them and losing the other
two. Ferrero’s absence from Roland Garros will be missed by many Spanish tennis fans, who are great admirers of his power game.
