Aqeel Khan wins 2010 Caltex Techron Tennis tournament
Pakistan’s number two tennis player, Aqeel Khan won the men’s singles event at the 2010 Caltex Techron Pakistan Open Tennis tournament on Friday.
The 30-year-old got the better of Faizan Khan Khurram in two sets in the title battle. He won 6-3, 6-1.
In women’s singles, Sarah Mahboob overpowered Ushna Suhail to emerge victorious in the end. She won 3-6 6-4, 1-0.
Country Manager of sponsors Chevron Pakistan, Muhammad Zubair and President of Pakistan Tennis Federation, Syed Kaleem Imam were also present at the event.
After the match, Muhammad Zubair threw some light on the efforts being made by his company for up-gradation of games in Pakistan. He said the purpose of sponsoring a Tennis event was to promote the game in the country.
Syed Kaleem Imam, on the other hand, said that a four-year plan has been formulated in order to increase the popularity of Tennis throughout the country and to find hidden talent which can represent Pakistan at the sport’s highest level all around the world.
Caroline Wozniacki defends top spot
World number one Caroline Wozniacki of Denmark who is still looking for her first Grand Slam title on the tour says that she rightly deserves the top spot in the South African Airways WTA rankings.
The 20-year-old tennis ace from Denmark who finished the 2010 season ranked number one in the world for the first time in her career, will play in an exhibition clash against Kim Clijsters on Saturday. Despite her top rankings, the right-hander is still
major-less and posted her best Grand Slam result by reaching the US Open final back in 2009.
While commenting on her current number one ranking, the Dane added that she played quite consistently throughout the season and won six titles in 2010 which is the reason for her number one spot.
Sanam-Somdev and Vardhan-Sharan granted wild cards for Chennai Open
The 2010 Asian Games doubles gold medallist pair of Sanam Singh and Somdev Devvarman received wild cards into the main draw of the 2011 Chennai Open starting from 3 January 2011 in India.
Another local duo featuring Vishnu Vardhan and Divij Sharan were also granted wild cards.
The organisers of the Chennai Open have given wild cards to both the teams considering their recent performance on the tour. It is therefore, a good opportunity for both the Indian tandems to highlight their talent at their home turf.
Somdev is currently ranked number 211 in the doubles ranking whereas his partner Sanam is ranked 506.
Vardhan, on the other hand enjoys an ATP doubles ranking of 295 while his partner is placed at 309.
