Tennis News: Carlos Moya makes debut at the Champions Tour event in Bogota
Former world number one Carlos Moya of Spain has announced to make his debut at the ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) Champions Tour in Columbia. He will be launching his Champions Tour career in Bogota, at the annual edition
of Seguros Bolivar Tennis Championships, starting from 19th of May.
34-year-old Spaniard had just announced his retirement from professional tennis in November last year but his hunger for playing the game is still not over. He announced on his Twitter feed one day ago that his entice to compete
prompted him to become a part of the ATP Champions Tour. He believes that the clay courts of Palacio de los Deportes are excellent for him to make a debut and hit the deck straight away.
Moya has been one of the most renowned tennis players to have represented Spain for over 15 years in his ATP career. He featured in the final of the Australian Open in 1997 but was defeated by the tennis legend, Pete Samprass.
20 ATP singles titles are attributes to the Spaniard’s name, including the all prestigious Grand Slam tournament, the Roland Garros in 1998. Moya rose to the top spot in world rankings the very next year after he won the French Open and remained the world
number one player for two weeks.
The 34-year-old Spaniard is also remembered for his brilliant performances in the 2004 edition of the Davis Cup ties, as he brought the championship title to Spain. His consistent individual performances with the racquet greatly
assisted the Spanish squad to win the final of the Davis Cup against the United States.
Moya’s decision to join the Champions Tour might create serious threats to the existing dominant forces, namely the 2010 top ranked Thomas Enqvist and Mark Philippoussis, who is at the top of the South African Airways Rankings.
The Spaniard was asked on Twitter that will he be able to outplay these competitors in Bogota, to which he answered: “Absolutely”.
The Spaniard is in the Group A of the Seguros Bolivar Tennis Championships; along with Roland Gaross champion Yevgeny Kafelnikov, former top ranked player Marcelo Rios and Mario Rincon of Columbia. Both Enqvist and Philippoussis
are present in the Group B of the tournament draws and Moya needs to reach the final if he wants to face the either of the two men.
The South American Swing for the ATP Champions Tour will continue after Bogota and its next stop will be in Sao Paulo, Brazil for the Grand Champions Brasil at the Sociedade Harmonia de Tenis towards the end of May.
