Tennis News: David Nalbandian awarded wildcard for the 2011 AEGON Championships
Former world number three, David Nalbandian of Argentina has received a wildcard entry to the AEGON Championships, to be played next month.
The ATP (Association of Tennis Professionals) World Tour 250 event will be held on the grass courts at the Queen's Club in London, United Kingdom, from 6th June.
The 2002 Wimbledon finalist has been battling with persistent injuries for the past twelve months and has been toiling hard to get his vintage form back. It appears that it is too quick for Nalbandian to make a comeback at Roland Garros this week but he is determined to put the best of his efforts in the clay-court Grand Slam event.
29-year-old Nalbandian committed to take part in the AEGON Championships on Tuesday and is hopeful of making a good comeback on the grass courts of London. The Argentine mentioned that he is looking forward to break free from his injuries and make his mark in this year’s grass-court season.
“It has been a frustrating time, but my recovery is going well and I expect to be in good shape for the tournament. I enjoy playing on grass. I hope to have a successful grass court season this year.”
The tournament director, Chris Kermode was extremely elated to award a wildcard entry to Nalbandian into the main draws of the tournament.
“The AEGON Championships has a tradition of using its wild cards to give opportunities to established players who have had a difficult time with injuries,” Kermode expressed. “In awarding our first wild card to David Nalbandian we have maintained that tradition, and added an exciting, explosive and entertaining tennis player to our singles main draw.”
Nalbandian has already won 11 ATP titles in his 10-year professional career and is desperately searching for another one to get his form back. He has reached the semi-finals at least once of all four Grand Slams. However, the Argentine has never been able to clinch the prestigious title for himself. The aggressive Argentine is well reputed of taking down any top ranked player on his day and his inclusion in the AEGON Championships certainly makes the field more competitive.
The other top class players to compete in the tournament include the world number one, Rafael Nadal, the second ranked Novak Djokovic, world number four Andy Murray, the four-time champion Andy Roddick and the explosive Argentine, Juan Martin Del Potro. Sam Querrey of the United States will be defending his title at the AEGON Championship.
There are still four wildcards to be awarded for the AEGON Championships, which will be announced most probably on coming Monday.
